Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko Ordered to Stop Flying National Flag On His Car

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has reportedly been directed by the government to stop flying the national flag on his official car.

Nairobi News reports that Sonko was ordered by Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho to stop flying the flag earlier this week.

In a post on his Facebook page on Wednesday, Sonko suggested he had removed the flag from his vehicle.
“Mambo ya flag hizo nimekubali kutoa as adviced by Karanja Kibicho na Ndegwa,” posted Governor Sonko.

The flamboyant politician is the only of the 47 governors, who has been flying the national flag on his vehicle, which contravenes the law. The National Flags Emblems and Names Amendment Act of 2014 states that, an individual shall not fly the national flag on their cars, except with the authorization of Interior Ministry.

The President, Deputy President, Chief Justice, Cabinet Secretaries, Speakers of the National Assembly and Senate as well as Kenyan diplomats while in foreign missions are the only persons allowed to put the flag on their official vehicles.

However, Governors are permitted to fly their respective county flags.

“A person who contravenes subsection (1) commits an offence and shall be liable, on conviction, to a fine not exceeding one million shillings or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years, or both,” warns the Act.
